Cooling Pads?

To cool or not to cool? That is the question. The answer is that overheating is one of the more common reasons that laptops don’t run as effectively as they should. In fact, overheating can even lead to a laptop’s premature demise.

So, are cooling pads worth it? That would depend on you, your laptop and the cooling pad. For instance, if you take part in some heavy-duty gaming, your cooling requirements will also be more heavy-duty. Cooling pads can also act as a buffer if you rest your laptop on your lap while using it. Plus, the added circulation that cooling pads with fans can provide may even help keep your laptop vents free of dust build-up.

A couple examples of cooling pads that are hot right now include the Llamo Gaming Laptop Cooler and the Targus Laptop Chill Mat Plus – which both get good reviews; the Thermaltake Massive 14-2 is good for larger laptops; and the IETS GT500V2 has some serious fan power. Laptop cooling fans will run you from around $20 to over $100, depending on which you choose.

However, it is important to note that a hot laptop with clogged vents will not benefit from any attempts at increased ventilation – cooling pad or not. So, first and foremost, you want to make certain that your laptop vents are free from dust.
