Granted, while artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to become a game-changer for so many of us across countless industries, we have also discovered that the human element should not be undervalued. In fact, AI has led to a few less than stellar moments lately. Here are just a few examples…
I am a Steelers fan. I know, I know, but this story may still interest you no matter which team elicits your hoots and hollers. Apparently, AI was used by the NFL to determine this year’s schedules and the Steelers’ is far from perfect. In fact, it is actually so unfair – including short weeks resulting from Thursday night games (one of which is the Browns) followed by a scary December when they play three divisional opponents, the Eagles and then the Chiefs on Christmas – that NFL brass said that they are definitely going to take a closer look at things next year.
Ok so maybe you could care less about football, but what are your feelings on fast food? Truth be told, we all hit up a drive-thru from time to time whether we crave fast food or just convenience. Did you know that McDonalds even had issues with AI? Yep, during its AI drive-thru rollout, orders were not always accurate and AI also had trouble discerning background noise from actual orders being placed.
From misunderstood assignments, like when AI was used for ball tracking in a Scottish soccer match and ended up televising the movement of a bald gentleman’s head; to AI gone rogue with false accusations, such as the time an announcer said that Golden State Warrior Guard Klay Thompson was shooting bricks and AI instead accused him of vandalism…the bottom line is that we still have some pretty serious strides to make when it comes to AI.
